Exact Duplicates vs Similar Photos on Mac

Learn the difference between identical photo files, edited versions and similar shots, and how to review them before importing with PhotoFold.

Exact duplicates have identical file data

Two copies can have different filenames and still contain identical bytes. PhotoFold uses file hashing for exact duplicate detection. Changing embedded metadata or re-saving the image changes the file data, even when the picture looks the same.

Similar photos can contain important differences

A burst sequence may include a sharper frame or a better expression. An edited version may have a useful crop. Visual similarity helps you find candidates for comparison; it does not establish which image is better or whether one can safely be discarded.

ExampleHow to think about it
The same file copied to two foldersCandidate for exact matching
A photo exported at a smaller sizePotential visual match; file data differs
Two frames in a burstSimilar scene; inspect focus and expression
RAW and its JPEG exportDifferent formats and editing flexibility; both may be useful

Review matches before importing

In PhotoFold, open Similar Photos and review each group. Double-click for the original-quality view. Compare focus, framing and the purpose of each version before choosing Import or Skip.

Import and unmarked photos are eligible for copying; Skip excludes a photo from that import. Skip does not delete the source. Keep your backup and check imported copies before deleting anything separately.
